Dean Munsey from Prineville, Oregon, was an active competitor in powerlifting from 1986 until 2013.
He competed in 12 World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL) world championships, winning half of them. A lifelong Oregonian, Dean grew up playing sports, excelling in high school football and wrestling at Crane and Crook County high schools in Eastern and Central Oregon. In 1983 he was chosen for the All-Oregon and Shriners’ football teams before his graduation the next spring.
Dean began weight training in 1981, and his exposure to powerlifting and competition began in 1986, about the same time he joined the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. He shared his enthusiasm by coaching others. In addition to powerlifting, he also coaches competitors in Strong Man, Highland Games, MAS Wrestling and football.
